VAOCANI

The most sublime of the peoples of Sucra-Loca, the very offspring of the Holy Seraphim; the half-human, half-angel Vaocani are considered higher beings in their own right, many being lauded as demi-gods and worshipped by their city. Their population is extremely miniscule, barely exceeding 200 in total. Despite this however, they hold great sway over much of the continent, their powers extending from one of the six major cities they preside over, with a ruling Vaocani family overseeing each of the cities. Extreme hierarchies purvey themselves within the families, those with the closest ancestry to the Seraphim holding vastly more power over those further down the family line - causing much turmoil, perhaps even being one of the many catalysts that caused the endless war plaguing the lands. Most if not all Vaocani continue to live extremely lavishly, either unaware or wholly uncaring of the goings-on of the more common people, and far from the harsh realities of the Entrenching War.

PURE VAOCANI (2025)

Drawing lineage directly from the Holy Seraphim, the Vaocani are blessed with an ethereal beauty and are generally androgynous in appearance. Their large, black eyes are, by far, their most distinctive feature - their deep gaze both enthralling and off-putting - marking them distinctly from newer bred Vaocani whose eyes shine yellow like the Idro.  The black-eyed Vaocani are the upper eschalon of the upper eschalon, not only ruling over their cities and vassals, but over the “lesser” Vaocani as well. As the Seraphim has not been seen for several hundred years, no “purebred” Vaocani have graced Sucra-Loca in recent time. Some have attempted producing heirs with each other, only for many of these offspring to die as stillbirths or horrendously misshapen. As such, the Vaocani have begun a tradition of holding vast harems to bear new offspring, something continued to this day by both pure and lesser Vaocani. As of current knowledge, there are at least six known of these Vaocani - residing deep within fortified palaces and protected at all times by legions of powerful guardsmen, court eunuchs, and their impure descendants who have been raised to protect their forebearer’s interests.

VAOCANI LESSER NOBLE (2023 & 2024)

While not having the same authority as their forebearer, all Vaocani are treated with great fear and respect, all having been elevated as nobles within their cities. All Vaocani bear similar appearances; save for the eyes, they all possess pearlescent and untarnished skin with hair shimmering like soft dusk, an enthralling site for all onlookers. Protruding from their backs, a set of growths resembling something like veiny wings appear, the most distinctive mark of a Vaocani. Of course, the further down the familial line, away from the Seraphim, the more traits they begin to lose, their skin becoming less pallid and some even losing the notion of wings - holding less power over their respective city. Gender has no true holding over the Vaocani, many having the ability to change themselves as they see fit over a period of time - with gender also not being a factor for rulership. While the noble courts are egalitarian based on gender, these courts, by no means, are equal; becoming extremely hierarchical with great cliques forming and waging subversive wars on each other. Some cities, despite being officially under the Domain, have been known to wage the occasional war on each other - with Domain soldiers fighting their own comrades.

VAOCANI EXILE (2024)

The further down a child is along the familial line, the further they are from direct decendanse of the Holy Seraphim, the more Vaocani features they will lose. When a Vaocani is born without wings, they are no longer considered to be a true Vaocani, and are cast from the ring of nobility and sent into exile, under penalty of death should they return to their hiome city. The furthest generation to still retain their wings being the fourth from the Seraphim, with no evidence that children beyond this point possess any recognizable Vaocani traits - their long lives and black skeletons being the only indicators of Vaocani ancestry. Many of these children are disposed of, but some manage to survive life outside the city walls - either through sheer determination and grit, or through the extremely rare compassion of their parents. Some are unaware of their heritage, with those that do keeping such information a closely guarded secret, as Vaocani body parts are considered to be potent in the world of black-market medicines. This exile is named “Marion Irvine Matisse“ .
